with them before disappearing. >>> they were once bitter political rivals, but president obama is now lavishing praise on his outgoing secretary of state, hillary clinton. the joint interview last night on "60 minutes" was the president's idea. mr. obama said their shared vision for america's role in the world persuaded become a top diplomat and one of his most trusted advisers. >> i'm going to miss her. i wish she was sticking around. a lot of the successes we've had internationally have been because of her hard work. >> in politics and in democracy, sometimes you win elections, sometimes you lose elections. i worked very hard, but i lost. >> clinton, whose term as secretary of state ends this coming friday, refused to answer any questions about her political future and no outright night about 2016. >>> the ice storm that's made a mess out of the middle of the country is moving east just in time for the morning rush hour. yesterday, conditions were a mess as a mixture of ice, snow and freezing rain made travel treacherous in illinois and iowa. a section of interstate 35 was closed fo

and sounded like a grouch attacking president obama. a very political speech which i thought was discordant yesterday. there were two -- captain kelly, gabby giffords's husband, and the captain of the bald moore county sheriff's department james johnson who spoke very powerfully articulately and eloquently for common sense gun control measures, and then the other side of the panel, there were three gun nuts on the panel. david coppel, a professor from denver, a woman gail trotter, and wayne lapierre from the nra. gail trotter was out of her mine. i mean, she said guns -- i got the exact quote here -- that guns have to -- guns keep women safe. guns keep women safe. guns make women safe is the exact quote. and every mother needs an ak-15 in the home to protect their kids. and of course wayne lapierre comes back and says the only answer is we have to make every school an armed camp. >> it's time to throw an immediate blanket of security around our children. about a third of our schools right now have armed security already, because it works, and that somebody is grow

more aggressively? we being the u.s. government? >> we had a political narrative, the obama administration did, of the george bush equivalent of mission accomplished. it was job well done. we wanted the narrative to say everything is okay in libya. it's been a wonderful success story. she did have time to go through the tv shows when it was a victory lap about the libya, the overthrow of gaddafi, she has better things to do on sunday mornings than explain this failure in leadership and failure in accountability and failure of our intelligence or what happened. we still don't have a clear picture. >> congresswoman thanks so much for coming in. >> thank you. >> coming up, perfume for babies? sounds slightly ridiculous, right? wrong. coming to a store near you. >> then are you ready for some football? clayton has the gadgets and gizmos to take your super bowl party to a whole new level. i wish he had the nachos. >> welt. >> you ready for some football. the countdown is on for the super bowl. lucky for you clayton has the gantle you need to make your party teched out. >> nertd -

connell. >> some have said it was it was indelicate of me to suggest that our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny president obama a second term. but the fact is, if our primary legislative goals are to repeal and replace the health spending bill, to end the bailouts, cut spending and shrink the size and scope of government, the only way to do all of those things is to put someone in the white house who won't veto any of these things. >> after that, democrats worried republicans were trying to annihilate the democratic party, in part by trying to destroy unions, the most vivid example of that, wisconsin. the republican governor successfully pushed a bill that stripped collective bargaining rights for most public unions. ohio and michigan followed scott walker's lead with mixed success. and now it seems the tables have turned. now if you believe boehner, the democrats want to annihilate the gop. so the talkback question for you, do you agree with boehner? will obama try to annihilate the republican party? facebook.com/carolcnn, or tweet me @carolcnn. i'll be right back.

dislikes washington and disdains office politics and bureaucracy. they say her dream job would be commissioner of major league baseball or fbi director. she was considered for that latter post before president obama picked white, one of this generation's best prosecutors, to police wall street. the first woman u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york, white led prosecution teams that convicted mob boss john gotti, a vicious mob killer who had escaped prosecution by tampering with juries. white kept her jury anonymous and sequestered. she built the best set of terrorism prosecutors in america, convicting the blind sheik for conspiracy to bomb the united nations and other new york landmarks. she also convicted ramsey youseff for the 1993 world trade center bombing. and she was on osama bin laden's trail before anyone, indicting the al qaeda leader for the deaths of 18 u.s. soldiers in somalia in 1993, charges that later included the 1998 bombings embassies in kenya and tanzania. >> so i'd say that's a pretty good run. you don't want to mess with mary jo. mary jo does n

big ideas. that's where ali sat down with eric kantor to discuss washington's next big political battle budget. >> when you look at the options out there, president obama's budget proposal and paul ryan's offer, they both don't do what guys say need to be done. now you have a proposal that said you will balance the budget in years. i asked paul ryan this and i can't get an answer. how? it's going to hurt. >> there new base lines in the budget. as we know, some of the difficulty and the differences in washington were centered around the method of accounting whether it's static or dynamic. when you raise taxes, that $650 billion of additional tacks that went in because of the cliff deal, that adjusts the base line. that is going to make the numbers look differently. right? we will have to make choices. no question about it. we have committed to putting a budget out there that will bring it to balance within years. >> the fact is nobody seems to want to own up to a budget that will hurt. >> the ryan budget, the last didn't balance in almost 30 years. the way we were trying to move s

nation's capital. i think it's safe to say there is a new level of political intrigue because of something that air on television last night. a rare sight to see. president barack obama and outgoing secretary of state hillary clinton sitting down together, side by side, for a joint interview. this as mrs. clinton prepares to leave office on friday. the two indulged in a lot of mutuual praise while talking to "60 minutes." >> hillary will go down as one of the best secretary of states we've had. >> this has been such an honor. >> such an important adviser on a whole range of issues. >> i want to bring in jamie rubin. i have to ask, when you sat down and watched that interview, what do you see? >> i guess just seeing the interview itself is pretty stunning. i have worked in the area for the secretary of state, working for the white house, setting up various media opportunities and never heard of over seen anything like that, where you have the president actually side sbid with a member of his cabinet, any member of his cabinet. anyone at all. the president always goes alone, so

such weapons. that puts him at odds with many of his fellow republicans. >>> political insiders say it looked more like a campaign event than a presidential speech. president obama pushed for immigration reform before an enthusiastic crowd in las vegas yesterday. his proposal is very similar to one being put forth by a group of bipartisan senators. >> action must follow. we can't allow immigration reform to get bogged down in an endless debate. >> the two proposals focus on the same main principle. finding a way towards citizenship for the 11 million immigrants living here illegally. >> obviously, there's certainly -- the chances are higher now that something is going to happen on this issue compared to years past. the biggest hurdle, though, is that folks who aren't too crazy about this idea are saying in order for these things to happen, let's focus on border security. as long as folks can just flood into the country, it makes no difference what we're doing on the legislative side of things. that's going to become a sticking point. they're saying border patrol at the same time we're creatin

that all americans can support. there's no political ideology that finds this cruel loss of life acceptable. i was incredibly pleased to see president obama include as part of his comprehensive plan to prevent gun violence a bill that i first introduced in 2009 with mayor bloomberg and commissioner kelly called "the gun trafficking prevention act," which would be the first federal law to define gun trafficking as a federal crime and event scofers illegal guns from being -- scores of illegal guns from being moved into the hands of criminals. we have thousands of laws but effectively none of them are directly focused on preventing someone from driving from one state to another state with a
